European Mosaic – One but different… living apart but together… many doors but one house…

The main ideas behind the project is that students show their monuments & places of interest from a different perspective. This is shown through people & movement and not as static objects/places. ‘Monuments’ could be their home where they live, or the clubs, discos, pubs are their places of interest. Restaurants, shopping, etc. is our youth places of interest – although we live in different countries, brand names/restaurants seem to be common to all of our young people. Seeing all this we can see that there are many differences and so we must understand diversities. Though different countries have different religions, food, habits, transportation, etc. we must understand these diversities and still belong to this one Europe.Finally we must live with diversities. So, we project how all these differences still make us one Europe. Though different still One …

The project has three main aims. After the students introduce themselves, their respective schools and where they come from, the first aim is on Monuments and Places of Interests. Here the participants go around their villages/areas and build up a portfolio of monuments and places of interests differently from seen in a normal book – the main concern here is people and movement. Apart from the historical monuments and places of interests, participants introduce their monuments: their houses, clubs, pubs, restaurants, shopping, etc. Also participants are to look for those people in their area which might have been forgotten and so create views of: artists, scientists, writers, historians, geologists, etc.

The expected impact here is that students together with teachers and local community pinpoint the important historical places (which might be of different importance in each country); seeing this than students share their monuments which might be different from the historical monuments. Also, forgotten or never mentioned people which made hit in our localities are pinpointed.

Our second aim is that we Understand Diversities. Although we have different cultures, religions, habits, foods, etc we belong to one Europe. Our way of living might be totally different from participant countries but still with our diversities we are one.

The expected impact here is that after pinpointing interesting places and people students, teachers and local communities understand and thus integrate more with other different people from different countries.

The third aim is Living with Diversities. So, although we are different we belong (integration) to one Europe, and thus the European aspect here dominates with the diversities in our hometowns.

The expected impact in this third aim is to improve and make clearer the importance of unity, of Europe. Clear aspects of diversities are shown together with the importance of living with these differences and thus belonging to one Europe.

The participant members develop and use a common internet platform where they can chat together sharing their ideas, viewing each others’ news, etc. Also students develop a personal communication with each other using the internet mostly e-mails. Other activities are being presented on books, photos of places with a difference, presentation programs, exhibitions, etc. The main topics discussed will be:
-   introducing themselves, their schools and their areas
-   showing monuments and places
-   houses, clubs, shopping, etc.
-   views of : artists, scientists, writers, historians, geologists, etc.
-   religions
-   food
-   habits
-   transportation
-   festivals/feasts
-   understanding & living with diversities – thus belonging to one Europe

The end product is that continuously students and teachers share their ideas via the internet – e-mails & chat room. Also by the end of the three years we would have: A Recipe Book (cd) of Local dishes of different participating countries, Presentations (on computer), Different Sites which eventually build up one Common Site, Documented Project and Travelling Exhibition.

The progress is evaluated by continuously publishing information of sites. By discussing together in chat rooms and sharing ideas via e-mails. Also, the travelling exhibition is of great importance, where at the end of each year some students meet in various schools (refer to calendar). Obviously the project meetings done from time to time help a lot to check and help each other in the progress of the project.

The impact will be evaluated since as time pass by users make more use of internet facilities used, exhibition build up more from time to time, sites develop more, presentations and book (cd) will take a format.

Sites are published and so visited by anyone. The exhibition is exhibited in different schools from time to time. Presentations are shown in schools. All the events will be published in school magazines and local newspapers so that other schools may visit the sites, exhibition, presentations, etc.

Schools having pupils with special needs are encouraged to participate and belong to the group. Schools having female & male staff and pupils have participation from both categories – project is for all. Also, especially in schools having different ethnic groups, it is emphasized that though we might have different habits, food, religion, etc we all belong to one Europe, and so the importance to integrate more is emphasized.

All participating students/teachers will be shared amongst participating schools, which will then be published on the online site. Each participating school decide how to organize the site and presentation, but finally the coordinating school with the help of the other teachers participating in the project build up one site & presentation. Each school takes care to build up the local recipes and then the coordinating school takes care to have one book (cd) of recipes as the final product. Schools help in the building up of the travelling exhibition.

Project build-up is mainly done using new technologies. Students and teachers constantly make use of the internet such as chat rooms, newsgroups, e-mails, etc. Also different software/hardware is being used throughout the project; mainly word processing programs such as MS Word, Presentation programs (MS Power Point), DTP programs, Photo-editing programs. Also for site build-up programs such as Frontpage or Macromedia are being used. Hardware such as digital cameras, scanners, webcam, etc are to be used. Depending on different stages throughout the project these technologies will be used by participating schools: teachers and/or students.

Students will be involved in the communication with different students, obviously done with the help of teachers at the beginning of each scholastic year. With the help of teachers students build up the sites, presentations, exhibition, documents and book (cd). The evaluation of the project is continuously carried out by students and teachers by checking out the advance of the project online and mainly by teachers in the project meetings done in the various schools.

Subjects such as Environmental Studies, European Studies, History and Geography are integrated in most all curricula. English will be improved a lot as it is the language used for the project by all participating schools. Other languages, especially in those schools where such languages are taught are improved together with their respective culture which is usually part of the language curriculum. Also the project offers the opportunity to deal with new technologies mostly internet, different software, etc. Other subjects such as photography, media, religion, culture, environmental studies, etc are also being used thus enhancing more the students especially those which are not included in the schools’ curriculum.
